About Geothermal Heating:
In virtually every region of the United States homeowners are enjoying a high level of comfort and significantly reducing their energy use today with geothermal heat pumps also called geothermal ground contact heat exchange (geothermal) heating and cooling.
"Direct Exchange" or "DX" system is a type of system that uses a much shorter loop of piping buried below ground, through which the refrigerant itself is circulated, replacing the heat transfer fluid used in other geothermal systems because the heat is transferred directly between the refrigerant and the ground, the amount of piping can be drastically reduced. This type of system is ideal for situations where the amount of space for the piping loop is very limited
One other benefit of copper vs. plastic is the type of heat exchange done in the earth. With plastic, it does a sensible heat exchange. A way to explain that is that it must pick up degrees from the earth, not necessarily BTUs. The copper does a latent heat exchange, (exchanges BTUs), which will have a larger range of being able to pick up heat from the ground. The refrigerant circulates through a copper pipe placed directly in the ground. This eliminates the need for a heat exchanger between the refrigerant loop and the water loop, as well as eliminating the water pump. These simpler systems are able to reach higher efficiencies while also requiring a shorter and smaller pipe to be placed in the ground, thus being less expensive to install. DX systems are a relatively newer technology than water-source. DX systems, like water-source systems, can also be used to heat water in the house for use in radiant heating applications and for domestic hot water, as well as for cooling applications.
