Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of solar energy?
Besides economic reasons, the environmental benefits of renewable energy are immediate and long term. Having a solar electric system contributes to cleaner water, fresher air, and sustainable use of our natural resources for future generations.
How do I know if solar will work on my house?
Solar works best on roofs facing south, though east or west roofs are also suitable. There should be little to no shade on the areas where the panels will be installed. The ideal pitch for your roof is 30 degrees directed south.
What is added to my house if I install a solar electric system?
Solar electric panels will be mounted on your roof, and wires will be run to your breaker panel and utility meter. Here, we will mount two disconnects an inverter, and a meter. This equipment can be hung either inside or outside, and will take up between 36-48” width on a wall.
What steps should I take to evaluate if solar is right for me?
1. Evaluate how much energy you use by gathering your electric bills from your previous years.
2. Determine what site may be the best location. Solar works best on south-facing roofs, though east or west oriented roofs are also suitable. There should be no or little shading.
3.Determine if there other energy conservation steps you can take within your home or business that will make the solar system more effective.

What if I am building a new home, and may want solar in the future?
You can have your home “pre-wired” for solar during the building stage. This gives them the easy opportunity to install the system at any time in the future. Many developers are going this route. If you are in the building stage, we will come to your home around the time when your AC electricians are running wires. We will run a conduit throughout your walls from the roof or attic space down to the wall where your equipment will be hung. This way, all wires are hidden when the installation is complete.
How much does solar cost?
The cost is dependent on a variety of site specific factors. There are incentives, including State and Federal tax credits, and state specific incentives. These incentives can cover a considerable portion of this cost. You can see a free quote using our solar calculator, or contact Savant Solar, for more detailed answers.
What size of a system do I need for my house?
Electricity production is directly proportional to system size for solar electric systems. It is possible for solar energy to meet 100 percent of the energy needs of a typical home on an annual basis. However, typical customers offset 30-50% of their energy. If you would like to offset a certain percentage of your utility bill, we can look at your past electric bills and accurately design a system to cover your needs. System sizes are usually determined by available roof space and financial factors. To give you an idea, a 2000sq ft house has a 5000 watt system.
Do I need a building permit to install renewable energy?
Yes. Contact your city or county building permit agency.
